Mayor Linda D. Thompson has announced that the Harrisburg Parks and Recreation Department’s 2010 Summer Enrichment Program will run June 14 thru August 13, 2010. It will consist of twelve (12) playgrounds with FREE lunches provided by the Harrisburg School District, two (2) City pools for recreational swimming, with Learn-To-Swim Classes, and City Island Beach for recreational swimming.

The Summer Enrichment Program runs Tuesday through Friday, 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM, at each playground. This year included in the morning playground activities will feature the SPARK FITNESS PROGRAM, an initiative of the Highmark Foundation. Each morning from 10 a.m. to 12:00 noon on every staffed playground participants of all sizes will experience “IT’S A NEW WAY FOR ENRICHMENT AND PLAY” by participating in inclusive, team sports, games, and competitions. All ages and sizes are welcome. No one will be excluded or left behind. For many youth, this program will be a continuation of the highly successful after-school programs at numerous Harrisburg School District schools during the Fall of 2009 and Winter/Spring of 2010.

Back by popular demand are the Sports and Cultural Camps and Girls’ and Boys’ Day Out. Other activities include arts & crafts, nutrition, fitness, talent shows, neighborhood concerts, swimming, fishing, social programs, team sports, cultural field trips, college prep classes, bowling, special activities days, golf, tennis, soccer, skating and many hours of fun.

The Harrisburg City Schools’ FREE Lunch Program begins on Wednesday, June 16, and runs through August 13th at or near most staffed playgrounds. To receive a free lunch, youth under-17 years of age must sign-up the previous day, and all lunches must be consumed on-site. The initial lunch registration will be held on Wednesday, June 16, 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM The first lunches will be served Thursday, June 17.
